At the corner of Peachtree and Baker Streets, this 23-story apartment building with 328 studio, one-, and two-bedroom units was the first luxury apartment building in the center of Atlanta.
The 240-foot-high structure included a reinforced concrete structural frame and masonry exterior with caisson foundations and was completed in 18 months. The grand opening was held in July 1962.
The building, equipped with high-speed elevators, was designed to bring luxury living within walking distance of Atlanta's central business district.
At the time of completion, the building housed more than 10,000 square feet of retail tenants: a 150-seat fine restaurant and lounge; a 1,200-square-foot food store; a drug store, barber shop, beauty salon, and shoe repair shop; tenant-only coin-operated laundry; a vending area; and office space.
Construction materials used included 2,152,462 pounds of steel, 65,922 sacks of cement for concrete work, and 10,116 sacks of mortar for brick work.
