Duval County Schools
Jacksonville, FL
Batson-Cook has completed twelve projects for the Duval County School System since 1988, totalling over $101 million in preconstruction services, new construction and renovation:
• Joseph Finegan Elementary School
• Mandarin Oaks Elementary School
• Chimney Lakes Elementary School
• Robert E. Lee Senior High School
• First Coast Senior High School
• Andrew Jackson High School Renovations
• Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology & A. Philip Randolph Academies of Technology
• Englewood High School Additions
• Landon Middle School
• Douglas Anderson School of the Arts
This Horizon-award winning public high school offers talented students the opportunity to prepare for a career or for advanced education in the arts. Completed in 2003, Batson-Cook added 40,000 square feet of new space along with 50,000 square feet of extensive renovations and upgrades to the existing building. A dramatic new artistic look was given to the facility through the addition of a 70’ by 55’ rotunda.
Two major challenges encountered on this project were an extremely tight site and occupied campus.
• Arlington Middle School
Preconstruction services in 2003 included constructability reviews, value management discussions, alternative systems studies, and various methods of approach. Based on these discussions, the conclusion was reached that the most advantageous and cost effective approach was to build a replacement school rather than renovate the existing one.
• Paxon Middle School Additions
This 2004 design-build renovation consists of three new single-story classroom wings at 20,000 square feet per building. Batson-Cook's management team worked extensively with the client during the preconstruction phase to ensure that the final design was most logical for their site and needs. They also achieved a value management savings in excess of $450,000.
