Batson-Cook's Fifth Annual Clays For A Cause Event Raises Money For American Cancer Society And Christian City

Clays sporting event provides $40,000 donations to respective charities

April 15, 2010 - West Point and Atlanta, GA - The Fifth Annual Clays for a Cause, sponsored by Batson-Cook, was recently held in Griffin, Georgia to raise money for the American Cancer Society Cobb / Northwest Georgia chapter and Christian City of Union City, Georgia.  This year’s sporting clays event, a venture that combines the talents of Batson-Cook employees from its Georgia offices, raised $40,000 for each charity.

In the five years that the event has been held, Clays for a Cause has raised over $380,000 for charity.  Of that, the American Cancer Society has received $215,000.  For its efforts, Batson-Cook received the 2009 HOPE Award from the Society, recognizing the general contractor for its outstanding contribution as a company.

Clays for a Cause is a unique event in that it is entirely run by Batson-Cook volunteers,” says David Prophitt, the American Cancer Society’s Area Executive Director for Cobb County and Northwest Georgia. “This amazing and successful fundraiser greatly helps our mission to fight all cancers, fund local programs and sponsor research throughout the country.”

This year, half of the money raised by Clays for a Cause was also donated to Christian City.  The funds will be used at the Children’s Village at Christian City, which offers life services and a safe haven to children in crisis ages 5-17.

“I am extremely grateful to the Batson-Cook team!  That they were able to go to their subcontractors in a down economy and generate this amount of support for those less fortunate is incredible,” commented Christian City President/CEO Bob Crutchfield.  “The money is important because it will help give children who live at The Children’s Village at Christian City a safe home, absent of abuse and filled with love. But, equally important are the new friends we have made and the partnership we have formed with Batson-Cook Construction and their employees. Batson-Cook’s corporate culture of giving back to the community is as good as any company I have seen in my almost 20 years at Christian City. We look forward to continued good relations for many years to come”.

Over 150 of Batson-Cook’s subcontractors participated in the event by entering teams, providing cash donations and providing in-kind donations.  “Expert Sponsors” included Alexander Contracting of Fortson, Georgia and Steel Fab of Charlotte, North Carolina. This representation exceeds the number of participating subcontractors from 2009.

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. Christian City ministers to families, but focuses primarily on the needs of abused and abandoned children, the aged and infirm. Services provided include residential, health and social services delivered in a manner consistent with the Christian faith. The Christian City campus is a vibrant and active Atlanta retirement community as well as refuge for children without families of their own. Every effort is made to see that both children and the aged have enriched and rewarding lives.  While expressly Christian in orientation, Christian City does not discriminate in any way with regard to who can benefit from services and ministries provided.
